Explore The Village of Appleton Wiske
Appleton Wiske is situated approximately 10 miles from Northallerton, 12 miles from Darlington and 7 miles from Yarm and offers a picturesque setting with a village inn, shop, primary school, church and regular bus service.
Although now largely a commuter village for Northallerton, Darlington and Teesside, Appleton Wiske still remains an agricultural community with many farms within its boundaries.
200 years ago linen production was the main industry in the area. Both spinning and weaving were undertaken, with the weaving usually done by the men in separate sheds and spinning being undertaken by women at home. Some houses still retain the ‘spinning windows’ which concentrated the light on the wheel.
The recently extended A1M is 6 miles to the West and the A19 is 6 miles to the Northeast, both offering easy access to Leeds, York, Middlesborough, Tees Valley and Leeds Bradford Airport.
Appleton Wiske is located close to the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales, which are full of cycle trails and fantastic, scenic walks and it is situated on the East Coast mainline, providing regular train services to London, Edinburgh, Leeds and York.
Other nearby towns include Helmsley, Thirsk and Richmond and a little further afield are York, Harrogate and Leeds, which can be accessed by the train station in Northallerton or around a one-hour drive.
The beautiful East Coast can also be reached in half an hour. Alternatively, if you wanted to leave the car at home and spend a day exploring the surroundings, there are plenty of picturesque walks right on your doorstep. There is also a lovely little village pub offering home cooked food and a large selection of local ales.
